In the 1970s, Mary O. Harrison started volunteering at the Presbyterian SeniorCare Network Oakmont campus. Mary visited with the residents and helping them became her main interest. By the 1980s, Mary’s dedication was recognized with an invitation to serve as the President of the Volunteer Auxiliary which included our Washington campus. She was then asked to join the Presbyterian SeniorCare Network board of directors. Mary worked with Charlie Pruitt, our former CEO, and other leaders to find a location to build Longwood at Oakmont, our first continuing care retirement community. Mary was on the Board when they voted to hire Paul Winkler, our current president and CEO!

Little did Mary know at the time that she would become so invested in Longwood at Oakmont – as a member of the board of directors, but also as a resident. In 2002, Mary and her late husband Dale moved into Longwood at Oakmont where her dedication to the independent living community grew even stronger.

Mary continues to enjoy being an active member of the Longwood at Oakmont community. She has been a part of (and still is for some) the Residents’ Council, Seasonal Plant Committee, the Spiritual Life Committee, the Healthcare Committee (Emeritus) and is a volunteer usher. Mary is currently on the Residents’ Council looking out for the interests of the third floor residents of the Overlook building where she lives.

While Mary spends a lot of her time serving on committees, she has never lost touch with what first brought her to Presbyterian SeniorCare Network – her love of helping people. She still visits with residents at Hanna HealthCare Center, the skilled nursing community at Longwood at Oakmont. Not only does Mary visit residents at the Hanna HealthCare Center, she also donated a garden in Dale’s memory. The garden is a popular spot for residents and family members to sit, socialize, and reflect.

Now, in 2018, nearly 50 years after she first visited one of our communities, Mary made the generous decision to createa Charitable Gift Annuity benefiting Presbyterian SeniorCare Network. Mary says, “Over the years, I have witnessed great work around the Network. Residents and their families have been helped due to the generosity of others and I wanted to continue my history of giving back to this wonderful organization.” Mary has designated her gift to the Longwood at Oakmont Life Care Fund.

Through countless hours of volunteer work, and her legacy gift, Mary has helped hundreds of residents.
